Judo Exchange Program: "Japan-ASEAN JITA-KYOEI PROJECT" in Myanmar

The Kodokan and the Asia Center of Japan Foundation dispatched two judo experts to Myanmar as part of a joint project, Japan-ASEAN JITA-KYOEI PROJECT. In two Myanmar cities (Naypyitaw and Yangon), two Judo experts recommended by the Kodokan conducted referee seminars, Kata seminars and tests for dan promotion.

DAY 1, May 18
We departed from Yangon airport in the early morning. Upon arrival at Naypyitaw airport, we went directly to National Sports Training Center (a training center used by national teams of various sports) and observed training. We introduced Mr. Taisei Saito (3rd Dan, an alumnus of Toyo University, a coach who started teaching in Myanmar a week ago) to Mr. Tun Tun, President of Myanmar Judo Federation and asked Mr. Tun Tun to support his coaching.
In the afternoon, we explained to national team members and students of physical training schools about the new IJF refereeing rules for two hours showing practical examples and then conducted a Kata seminar (Nage-no-Kata, Katame-no-Kata, Ju-no-Kata and Kime-no-Kata).
DAY 2, May 19
We conducted a Kata seminar for two hours in the morning. In the afternoon, we conducted a Dan promotion test for about 20 athletes who belong to the national team.
DAY 3, May 20
We traveled from Naypyitaw to Yangon by plane.
DAY 4, May 21
We visited Yangon Physical Training School (one of four physical training schools in Myanmar) and exchanged opinions with school director Mr. Soe Aun on dispatching of coaches and JICA volunteers in the future. Then we made a courtesy visit to Health and Sports Minister Myint Htwe and discussed Judo promotion in Myanmar. Mr. Tun Tun informed Mr. Myint Htwe about the support activities for Myanmar Judo provided by the Kodokan and the Asia Center, Japan Foundation.
DAY 5, May 22
We made a courtesy visit to Mr. Tateshi Higuchi, Japanese Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary at the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar. First Secretary Yusuke Matsuoka (on loan from Japan Foundation) and Second Secretary Hideaki Higashi (on loan from Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) were also present in the talks. We explained current circumstances of Myanmar Judo to Mr. Higuchi and asked him for further support. In Myanmar, Japan Cup Judo Tournament is held every year with support of the Embassy of Japan.

DAY 6, May 23
We conducted a Kata seminar (Nage-no-Kata, Katame-no-Kata, Ju-no-Kata and Kime-no-Kata) in the morning (three hours) and in the afternoon (three hours). In hot and humid conditions, two electric fans helped us.
DAY 7, May 24
We conducted a test for Dan promotion for 40 applicants from 8 AM to 2 PM.
