Tsukinami-shiai is a traditional monthly contest that has been conducted by Kodokan since around 1885. Since there were not so many trainees in the early days of the Kodokan, they were ranked by their respective strength. The contest started with a match between trainees who were at lower ranks. Then the winner of the match fought with a trainee at the next level and could advance his rank for the next month according to the number of winning. (Reference: "Kano Jigoro, My Life and Judo")

Nowadays Tsukinami-shiai is conducted twice a month. One is for the trainees up to 1st Dan, and it has three divisions: Children 12 and under, No Dan and 1st Dan. The other one is for 2nd Dan and above.

The last contest for 2nd Dan and above was held on February 13 and had 50 participants. They were divided into the groups of each Dan and the members of each group lined up in order. Each participant could fight until he lost.

The next Tsukinami-shiai will take place as follows: For the trainees up to 1st Dan, it will be held on Thursday, March 6; the women's division and the 2nd Dan and above division will be held on Thursday, March 13.
